Malayapuram Singaravelu is considered as the first communist of South India. In 1925, he became one of the founding fathers of the Communist Party of India; and chaired its inaugural convention in Kanpur.
He is also known for organising the first trade union in India and fought against the prevalence of severe untouchability that was prevalent in 19th century India.
