Nanu, the son of Madan Asan and his wife Kuttiyamma is known as Narayana Guru. He was born on 20 August 1856 in the village of Chempazhanthy near Thiruvananthapuram, then the capital of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom.
He would go onto lead a socio-religious movement that would transform the lives of the lower caste people of Kerala
