WC Bonnerjee became the first president of the Indian National Congress on 28th December 1885. He presided over the Bombay session which included 72 members.
Born in Calcutta in 1844, he was an advocate of the Swadeshi movement and one of the co-founders of the Congress party.
After the Bombay session, he also presided over the Allahabad session of the Congress in 1892. He proposed the formation of standing committees of Congress.
A moderate in politics and lawyer by profession, he established the London Agency in 1888 to raise funds for India.
The salt tax was strongly criticized by him as an unjust tax on a chief necessity of life.
Mahatma Gandhi became the President of the Indian National Congress in 1912, after his return from South Africa.
Allan Octavian Hume, a retired Civil Servant of the British Government, formed the Indian National Congress.
Sarojini Naidu was the first woman president of the Indian National Congress.
The youngest president of the Indian National Congress was Abul Kalam Azad.
