Sarojini Naidu was the first woman to hold the office of governor of Independent India.
She served as the governor of Uttar Pradesh from 15 August 1947 to 2 March 1949.
Known as the Nightingale of India or Bharat Kokila, she was an active participant in the freedom struggle in India and an ardent supporter of Mahatma Gandhi. She was also a notable participant in the Quit India Movement and Salt Satyagraha.
She was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925. She was the second woman President of the Indian National Congress and the first Indian woman to hold that post.
A strong exponent of civil rights and the educational rights of women,she had an anti-imperialist point-of-view.
Her works in poetry were mostly lyrical and used rich sensory images. Her important works include The Golden threshold, The Bird of Time, and The Broken Wing.
