Who was the founder of British rule in India?

Robert Clive is regarded as the founder of British rule in India. Starting his career as a clerk in the East India Company, he would rise through the ranks to command British forces at the battle of Plassey.

The battle would lay the foundations of British rule in India as Bengal would be annexed by them. Bengal would provide the British a springboard for the conquest of India by the British.
