R. Rajagopalachari was the last Governor-general of India from 1948 to 1950.
An Indian statesman and activist, he became the only Indian and last Governor-general after India gained Independence. Dr.Rajendra Prasad succeeded him as the first President of India.
He also served as a leader of the Indian National Congress and Premier of Madras Presidency.
In an attempt to propagate his liberal ideologies, he started the Swatantra party in 1959.
He took part in the Non-Cooperation movement, Quit India movement, Vaikom Satyagraha, and Dandi March.
He was one of the first recipients of the highest civilian honour of the country, the Bharat Ratna.
In order to resolve the impasse between the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League, he proposed the C.T. formula. He proposed to give the Muslim Majority areas to the Muslim League. However, it was opposed within the Congress party and was a failure.
He worked for the upliftment of Dalits and was a part of temple entry movements in India.
