The rule of Ashoka is widely known through the rock edicts that he left behind, which in itself allowed his vision to reach the people in all corners of the vast Mauryan Empire. He is called great because of his model rule based on peace and compassion that helped in unifying the culturally diverse empire under a centralised administration.
