The NTA conducts the JEE Main examinations in two sessions on multiple dates with two shifts each day. The candidates will be given different sets of questions per session. Despite all efforts to maintain equivalence among the various question papers, the difficulty level of these JEE Main question papers administered in separate sessions may differ. Some candidates may end up attempting a tougher set of questions than others. The candidates who attempt the comparatively more challenging examination will likely get lower marks than those who take the easier one. To overcome such a situation, the NTA follows the “Normalisation Procedure Based on Percentile Score”, which will ensure that candidates are neither benefitted nor disadvantaged because of the difficulty level of the question paper. To ensure that a candidate’s actual merit is established, the NTA introduced the “Normalisation Procedure” to generate the percentile scores for multi-session question papers of the JEE Main exams.
What Is NTA Score?
NTA Scores in the JEE Main are normalised scores across multi-session papers. These scores are calculated based on the relative performance of all candidates who appeared for the examination in one session. Here, the marks obtained by the candidates will be converted into a scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each session.
How to Calculate NTA Score?
It is necessary to calculate the percentile score of the candidate to obtain the NTA normalised scores. The National Testing Agency usually calculates the percentile scores up to 7 decimal places in order to avoid the bunching effect and reduce the chances of ties in scores and ranks. Below is the formula for calculating the percentile score.
The calculation of the NTA score will be done as follows:
The JEE Main examination results for each session will be prepared in the form of
- Raw scores
- Percentiles scores of total raw scores
The percentile for each candidate in the session will be calculated as follows:
Let’s consider TP1 as the percentile score of the total raw score of a candidate in the JEE Main.
As calculated above, the percentile scores for the total raw score for all the sessions will be merged. The resulting scores are called the NTA scores, which will then be used to compile results, and will be further processed to determine their allocation.

Frequently Asked Questions on NTA Score in JEE Main Results
What does the NTA score indicate in JEE Main results?
NTA Scores are the normalised scores or percentile scores across multi-session papers. These scores are calculated based on the relative performance of all candidates who appeared for the examination in one session.
What does an NTA score of 20 mean in JEE Main results?
An NTA score of 20 means a 20 percentile score in JEE Main results.
What is the purpose of the JEE Main NTA score?
The NTA score is used to generate the merit list of the JEE Main exam. Suppose a candidate appeared in more than one session of JEE Main, the best of the NTA scores will be considered to prepare the All India Rank (AIR). The overall merit list of the candidates who appeared for the exam will be put together by merging the NTA scores of all shifts of all exam days.
How to convert the JEE Main NTA score to rank?
To convert the JEE Main NTA to rank, we can use the formula given below:
Rank = [100 – NTA score (or percentile)] * Number of candidates/100
