A cell is the structural, functional and basic unit of a life. Every living organism existing on the planet earth are made up of a cell. Therefore, the cell is called a basic unit of life.
The term cell was first discovered by an English philosopher Robert Hooke in the year 1665. A cell has specialized organelles with different functions. There are two main types of cell.
- Prokaryotic cells
They are the cells which do not have the true nucleus. All the single-celled or unicellular organisms including amoeba, bacteria, and paramecium are grouped into prokaryotes.
- Eukaryotic cells
They are the cells with the true nucleus and other specialized organelles. All the multicellular organisms including Plants, animals, birds, algae, reptiles are grouped into Eukaryotes and are composed of many cells.
