Aadi Mahotsav [UPSC Notes]

The Prime Minister inaugurated Aadi Mahotsav, the mega National Tribal Festival in Delhi in February 2023. Aadi Mahotsav is an important topic for the IAS exam, especially for the government schemes and social issues segments.

Aadi Mahotsav

It is an attempt to bring tribal culture to a national audience, and it celebrates the spirit of tribal culture, crafts, cuisine, commerce, and traditional art.

  • It is an annual initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation Limited (TRIFED).
  • It is a national level tribal festival celebrating the heritage, products and culture of the tribes of India.

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation Limited (TRIFED)
  • It is a national-level apex organisation that functions under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for administrative oversight. 
  • It facilitates and provides services to tribes in order for them to sell their products.
  • Its goal is to provide tribal people with knowledge, tools, and a pool of information so that they can conduct operations in a more systematic and scientific manner.
  • Its goal is to promote the socioeconomic development of tribal people in the country through the marketing of tribal products such as metal craft, tribal textiles, pottery, tribal paintings, and pottery, on which tribes rely heavily for a large portion of their income.

Aadi Mahotsav 2023

  • Pashmina Wool from Ladakh, Patchitra painting, Dhokara Sculpture from Chattisgarh, and Shree Anna basket were presented to the Prime Minister.

Aadi Mahotsav Significance

  • The Prime Minister emphasised that the Aadi Mahotsav strengthens India’s unity in diversity while promoting the concept of development through heritage.
  • Since 2023 is designated as the International Year of Millets, a special emphasis will be placed on showcasing Shree Anna, a recent government nomenclature for millets grown by tribals.
