In the process of getting the World Heritage Site status, Assam’s Moidams met UNESCO technical requirements for a heritage center. This is an important topic for the IAS exam.
News in details:
- Assam’s Moidams met all the technical requirements of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre.
- But it needs to be noted that meeting all the technical requirements does not imply that the site has outstanding universal value and will definitely be inscribed in the World Heritage List.

About Moidams:
- Moidams are the pyramid-like structure, mound burial tradition of the Tai Ahoms, who mainly ruled in Assam for almost 600 years, until the advent of the British in the 1820s.
- After the 18th century, the Shom rulers adopted Hindu method of cremation, later entombing the cremated bones and ashes in a Moidam.
- These remains are mainly seen in Charaideo in eastern Assam.
- Nomination of the Charaideo Moidams coincides with the 400th birth anniversary of the most celebrated Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan.
