Context: The National Telecommunications Institute for Policy Research, Innovation and Training (NTIPRIT) in Ghaziabad conducted a significant workshop on “Global Standards & IPR” to commemorate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17, 2024. 

  • This workshop, a precursor to the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24) scheduled to be hosted by India in October 2024, focused on bridging the standardization gap and building the capacity of faculty members from engineering colleges in Delhi and NCR.

 

Objectives and Focus

  • Bridging the Standardization Gap: The workshop aimed to enhance the understanding and implementation of global standards and intellectual property rights (IPR) among national stakeholders.
  • Capacity Building: Focused on equipping faculty members from engineering colleges in Delhi and NCR with the knowledge and tools necessary for standardization in telecommunications.
  • Global Collaboration: Emphasized the importance of global collaboration in standardization to foster innovation and technological advancement.

  • Enhanced Participation: Sets the stage for increased involvement of Indian experts in WTSA-2024.
  • Educational Advancement: Promotes the integration of global standards in the curriculum of engineering colleges, fostering a deeper understanding of telecommunications standards and IPR among future engineers.
  • Innovation and Competitiveness: Emphasizes the role of standards and IPR in driving innovation and maintaining competitiveness in the global market.

 

Collaboration and Partnerships

    • Forging Global Partnerships: Provided a platform for national stakeholders to align with international best practices and forge partnerships with global entities.
    • Standardization in Education: Encouraged collaboration between academic institutions and international organizations like ITU to promote standardization in technical education.

2.International Women in Maritime Day

Prelims: International Women in Maritime Day

 

Context: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi, recognizing the invaluable contributions of women seafarers. This year’s theme, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” underscores the significance of safety and security for women in the maritime sector.

 

Recognition of Women Seafarers

  • 27 Women Seafarers Honored: Women seafarers from various marine institutes and professionals in the maritime field were recognized for their dedication and contributions.
  • Strength and Resilience: These women exemplify strength and resilience in a traditionally male-dominated field, paving the way for future generations of women in maritime.

 

Importance of Women in Maritime

  • Secretary’s Statement: Secretary Shri T K Ramachandran emphasized the invaluable contributions of women in the maritime sector and the need to create opportunities for gender diversity.
  • Theme Emphasis: The theme “Safe Horizons” highlights the significant impact of women on maritime safety and the essential role they play in ensuring safe operations and protecting lives at sea.

 

Commitment to Gender Equality

  • Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender equality is recognized as a key pillar for a sustainable future, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations agenda.
  • MoPSW Initiatives: MoPSW is committed to supporting and empowering women in maritime through various initiatives and partnerships, including collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other industry stakeholders.

 

Significance

  • Increase in Women Seafarers: Over the last 9 years, the number of women seafarers has increased significantly, reflecting a growing trend towards gender diversity in the maritime sector.
  • Rise in Registered Women Seafarers: The Directorate General of Shipping has seen a notable increase in registered women seafarers, reflecting a 514% rise from 2014 to 2023.
