About Indian Engineering Services

The Indian Engineering Services, also known as Engineering Services Examination, is an exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to select engineers who will work for the government of India as Class – 1 officers. These engineers will be put in charge of a wide array of public sector infrastructure that consists of Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water engineering, Defence service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service etc.

The main purpose of releasing the UPSC IES Recruitment ExamNotification is to make a candidate familiar with the recruitment process, selection process, eligibility criteria, salary etc for that respective examination.

The official UPSC IES Recruitment Exam notification is released on the UPSC website where candidates can download the notification and go through the eligibility details and important dates and then accordingly apply online for the exam.

IES Eligibility Requirements 2023

The eligibility criteria fro each is based on the following:

  1. Age (as on as on 01-09-2022)
  2. Nationality
  3. Minimum Educational Qualification

(1) Nationality:

A candidate must be either:

(a) a citizen of India,

(b) a subject of Nepal,

(c) a subject of Bhutan,

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India,

(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India and that a candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment shall be given only after the necessary eligibility

certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

(2) Age Limits:

(a) A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st January, 2023 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1993 and not later than 1st January, 2002.

(b) The upper age-limit of 30 years will be relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/ Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/Post(s) mentioned in column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.

(c) A candidate who holds substantively a permanent post in the particular Department/Office concerned. This relaxation will not be admissible to a probationer appointed against a permanent post in the Department/Office during the period of hi/her probation.

(3) Educational Qualification

(a) Should have obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956

(b) Should have passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India)

(c) Or obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time

(d) Should have passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India);

(e) Should have passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India;

  • For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg. Posts) – M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
  • For Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’– M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics,
  • Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.

Indian Engineering Exam Apply Online

Step 1- Indian Engineering Services Exam

  1. Click on the link provided below or visit the official website.
  2. A new page will appear. New Users will have to register first.
  3. Click on New User Register
  4. A new page will appear to enter your mobile no. and email to register yourself.
  5. An OTP will be sent on your mobile no. and email, fill and click on “Submit”.
  6. A Login Id and Password will be sent to your registered mobile no. and email id.

Step 2- Login

  1. Login using the Registration Number and Password. Select the post.
  2. Fill up other details such as educational qualifications etc. depending upon the educational qualification of the candidate.
  3. Pay examination fee as applicable, online using Credit/Debit Card or Internet Banking
  4. Candidates are required to upload their scanned colour photograph and Signature (in English or in Hindi) in JPEG format.
  5. Login with Registration Number and Password in the link for “UPLOAD” and thereafter, upload the file/scanned filled
  6. Upload all the required certificates
  7. Submit the application. Print out the acknowledgement for records

IES Admit Card

  • Visit the commission’s official website.
  • On the “what’s new” section on the right-hand side of the webpage, identify the name of the examination. Click on “e-Admit Card: Engineering Services Examination (Prelims) 2023” or “e-Admit Card: Engineering Services Examination (Mains) 2023.”
  • After that, click on the IES exam admit card download link next to the examination name.
  • You can get your admit card by entering your roll number or registration ID. Choose any of the options.
  • After that, enter the relevant details – roll number or registration ID, roll number, and captcha.
  • After entering your credentials, click “submit,” and you will see the admit card on the screen.
  • Save the file to your device, and take a printout of it to appear for the examination.

UPSC IES Selection Process for 2023

Only candidates who pass both the IES preliminary and IES mains examination can appear for the interview. The prelims will have two parts – General Ability and Engineering Subject. The former paper level will be that of an Engineering/Science Graduate. Only those who qualify for the cut-off score of Papers 1 and 2 of the IES Preliminary Exam can take the IES Mains Exam.

Candidates who qualify for both the Preliminary and Mains exams can take the IES Personality Test. The Personality Exam or interview carries 200 marks. Following the successful completion of the personality test, the commission will verify the individual’s documentation and qualifications.

Based on the final score and the available vacancies, the UPSC recommends candidates for various positions in the Indian Engineering Service.

Furthermore, a candidate can attempt the IES examination any number of times till she or he attains the maximum prescribed age of 30 years.

The UPSC IES Exam Pattern is as follows:

  1. Stage-I: Objective Type Papers
  2. Stage-II: Conventional Type Papers
  3. Stage-III: Personality Test

UPSC IES Roles, Responsibilities and Career Growth

The service to which the UPSC IES candidates are assigned determines the career profile of those individuals. The type of their job and roles varies depending on the service and departments they are appointed in. Some of the responsibilities of the IES officers are as follows:

Unlike many other occupations, IES officers advance up the hierarchy as they gain experience. The IES officers with experience will be considered for the different positions. The officers will start out as Assistant Executive Engineers but may eventually rise to the position of Chairperson or Cabinet-level officer.

According to the Union Public Service Commission, an IES Officer can advance in the following ways in terms of promotions and career development:

  • After clearing the exam, the candidate is chosen initially for the position of Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director in any government department.
  • An officer becomes qualified for promotion as an Executive Engineer or a Director after serving for three to four years. However, this time frame for promotion could change based on the candidate’s performance while they were employed.
  • An officer is qualified for advancement to Joint General Manager or Chief Engineer of Level 2 after serving for around 13 years.
  • Promotion to the position of Chief Engineer or AGM (Additional General Manager) takes place after roughly 20 years of service.
  • Promotion to the position of Senior General Manager is possible after serving for 30 years.
  • Following the completion of 34 years of service, the officer will be qualified for the last promotion, which will see the officer elevated to the position of Chairperson or Managing Director.
