Mid-day Meal scheme was started in the year?

  • The Mid-day Meal scheme was launched in 1995 by the Ministry of Education.
  • Launched during the time of the P.V Narasimha Rao government, it is also known as the National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP -NPSE).
  • The scheme was implemented in all the states of India by 2002, based on the orders of the Supreme Court of India.
  • The program guarantees a meal per day to the students at junior and primary levels in government schools. The key problems addressed by the scheme are;
    1. Food Security
    2. Lack of Nutrition
    3. Access to Education
    • Meals provided aim to increase the attendance rate in schools, especially, of the disadvantaged sections of society, and improve their concentration in classroom activities.
    • The Mid-day Meal scheme also addresses two Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education and Zero hunger.
    • The state of Tamil Nadu was the first to introduce the Mid-day Meal scheme in 1925.
    • In 2021 September, the name of the Mid-day Meal scheme was changed to PM- POSHAN ( Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Scheme) by the Ministry of Education.
