The Self- Respect movement was a movement started by E. V. Ramasamy (known as Periyar) that aimed at achieving a society where the oppressed castes would have equal human rights.
The movement encouraged backward castes to have self-respect in the context of a caste-based society, considering them to be not worthy of respect.
