Tillage is a mechanical manipulation of the soil for the purpose of crop production. The main purposes of soil tillage are to provide
- Soil aeration for gaseous exchange in the seed and root zone.
- Good seed-soil contact permit water flows to seed and seedling roots.
- A non-crust soil contact to permit seedling emergence.
- Permit root elongation and proliferation.
- An environment that provides adequate light to the seedling (weed-free environment).
- Pest and pathogen free environment.
