What is the purpose of tillage?

Tillage is a mechanical manipulation of the soil for the purpose of crop production. The main purposes of soil tillage are to provide

  • Soil aeration for gaseous exchange in the seed and root zone. 
  • Good seed-soil contact permit water flows to seed and seedling roots. 
  • A non-crust soil contact to permit seedling emergence. 
  • Permit root elongation and proliferation.
  • An environment that provides adequate light to the seedling (weed-free environment). 
  • Pest and pathogen free environment.
