UPSC Prelims Question Paper 2022

The UPSC CSE Preliminary exam consists of two exams, both of which are administered on the same day.

  • Paper 1 of the UPSC Prelims General Studies
  • Paper 2 of the UPSC Prelims General Studies (CSAT)

Both papers have a 2-hour exam duration and are for 200 marks each. There is a negative marking on both papers. The aspirants should go through the IAS Prelims Syllabus to know the details of the subjects asked in the exam.

UPSC Prelims 2022 General Studies Paper 1

The UPSC Prelims Paper 1 is the objective paper, carrying 100 questions for 200 marks. The paper includes subjects such as History, Economy, Politics, Geography, Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology. Total scores of UPSC Prelims 2022 GS Paper 1 will determine the cut-off and decide whether a candidate has qualified for the first stage of the exam to write the UPSC Mains. The paper has a negative marking where 1/3rd marks are deducted for each incorrectly answered question.

UPSC Prelims 2022 General Studies Paper 2 (CSAT)

The UPSC Prelims Paper 2 is also an objective type paper conducted after the UPSC GS Paper 1. It consists of 80 questions carrying 200 marks. This paper differs slightly from General Studies Paper I as it includes questions designed to assess applicants’ reasoning abilities. It assesses comprehension abilities, analytical and communication abilities, decision-making abilities, problem-solving abilities, basic numeracy and mental ability. Like Paper 1, the exam also includes a negative marking scheme, where 1/3rd of the total marks allotted to the question are deducted for every wrong answer. Unlike Paper 1, the nature of Paper 2 is only qualifying. The candidate needs to score only 33% of the marks to be eligible for advancing to the next stage.
