What is Meant by Percentage?

In Mathematics, a percentage is a dimensionless number. It is a ratio or a number that is expressed as a fraction of 100. The symbol used to denote percentage is the percentage sign (%). Some of the abbreviations used are pct or pc. Generally, the percentage is used to express the proportionate part of the total number.

For example, 55% can be written as 55/100, or it can be expressed as 55:100 or 0.55.

The formula to calculate the percentage is given by

Percentage, % = (Value/Total value) ×100

Example 1:

20 is what percentage of 40?

Solution

We know that Percentage, % = (Value/Total value) ×100

Therefore, percentage = (20/40) ×100

= 2000/40

= 50%

Hence, 20 is 50% of 40.

Example 2:

What is 10% of 50?

Solution:

We know that Percentage, % = (Value/Total value) ×100

Let value = b and total value = a

Hence, the formula becomes, p% = b/a

Now, we have to find “b”

Substitute the values in the formula,

10% = b/50

(10%) × 50 = b

b = 0.1 x 50

b = 5

Hence, 10% of 50 is 5.

Example 3:

5 is 65% of what?

Solution:

We know that Percentage, % = (Value/Total value) ×100

Let value = b and total value = a

Hence, the formula becomes, p% = b/a

Now, we have to find “a”

Substitute the values in the formula,

65% = 5/a

a = 5 / 65%

a = 7.69

Hence, 5 is 65% of 7.69.

Example 4:

What percentage of 70 is 8?

Solution:

We know that p% = b/a

Where a and b are numbers

Here a is 70 and b is 8

Hence, p% = 8/70 = 0.114

For converting decimal to a percentage, multiply the decimal by 100

p%  =0.11428 x 100

p% = 11.428%

Hence 11.428% of 70 is 8.

Example 5:

64% of what is 9?

Solution:

We know that p% = b/a

Where a and b are numbers

Now, we have to find a

Here b is 9 and p% is 64%

Hence, a = b/p%

a = 9/64%

a = 9/ 0.64

a = 14.0625

Hence, 64% of 14.0625 is 9.
