Why was a Khilafat committee formed?

The Khilafat committee was formed to defend the powers of the Ottoman Caliph which was restricted following the Treaty of Sevres at the end of World War I.

It was the nucleus of the Khilafat movement started under the leadership of Mohammed Ali, Shaukat Ali, Maulana Azad, Hakim Ajmal Khan and Hasrat Mohani. The Khilafat movement coincided with the Non-cooperation movement and was a pivotal moment in the history of the Indian independence movement.
