Who was Khalifa?

Khalifa or Khalifah is a name or title which means “successor”, “ruler” or “leader”. It most commonly refers to the leader of a Caliphate, but is also used as a title among various Islamic religious groups and others. 

The Khalifa of the Ottoman Empire was seen as a spiritual leader by many Muslims and its powers was effectively stripped following the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in WOrld War I

The Khilafat movement was a movement launched by the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent to restore the Ottoman caliph who was considered the leader of the Muslims, as an effective political authority.
