Television in India
- According to the Indian Express, B.Sivakumaran,a student of Electrical Engineering, gave a demonstration of Television at an exhibition in the Teynampet in Madras.
- All India Radio(AIR) started broadcasting on an experimental basis in India in 1957. The early programs were educational programmes for students and farmers.
- In 1976, Doordarshan, the television arm of AIR, became a separate department. The 9th Asian Games were telecast by Doordarshan using the INSAT 1A satellite. Colour broadcasting was also begun by Doordarshan on August 15, 1985.
- Under the SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment), educational videos were broadcasted to the villages of India across six states.
- Prasar Bharati was established in 1997 as a statutory autonomous body. All India Radio and Doordarshan were transformed into government-owned corporations under Prasar Bharati.
- Private channels evolved in the Indian arena during the 1990s. Regional channels halso started broadcasting in India during this period.
