Who is not an integral part of Parliament?

  • The Vice-President of India is not considered an integral part of the Parliament.
  • The office of Vice President is the second highest constitutional office in the country.
  • Article 63 of the constitution states that ” There shall be a Vice-President of India”.
  • Under article 64, the Vice President is the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, and does not hold any other office of profit.
  • The term of office is five years or until the successor assumes the office, and is elected by the members of both houses of Parliament by proportional representation using single transferable votes.
  • The Vice President can act as a President in case of death, removal, resignation, etc.

    Current Vice-President of India – M. Venkaiah Naidu

    Qualifications

    • Must be a citizen of India
    • At Least 35 years of age
    • Not hold any office of Profit.
