Why did the East India Company acquire a charter from the ruler of England Queen Elizabeth I in 1600?

The East India Company acquired a charter from Queen Elizabeth I so that its merchants could start trading in the East Indies. With this they hoped to break the monopoly the Dutch had in that region.

The Dutch were the first to start a trading company of their own and in doing so stole the initiative from all their European rivals.
