Why Indian Constitution is called the written constitution?

The written constitution is one of the important federal features of the Constitution. Indian constitution is not only a written constitution but also the lengthiest constitution in the world. The written constitution document specifies the structure, organisation, powers and functions of both Central and State governments and prescribes the limits within which they must operate. Thus, the written format of the constitution avoids any kind of misunderstandings and disagreements between the two.

The Indian Constitution was not typeset or printed, but was handwritten by calligraphers in two versions – English and Hindi.
