SSC CGL DEST: Tier 2 Exam

Every year, the SSC (Staff Selection Commission) conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination to select candidates for non-gazetted positions in various government agencies. The selection process for SSC CGL 2023 has been modified to a two-tier system by the Staff Selection Commission in 2022. The Tier 1 exam is a computer-based test and serves as the initial stage of the selection process. The SSC CGL 2023 Tier-1 exam will take place from 14th July to 27th July 2023.

Aspirants can go through the detailed information on SSC CGL Notification on the given link.

Tier 2 comprises three papers: Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3. One of the tests in SSC CGL Tier 2 is the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST). This test evaluates the candidate’s speed in handling data and their ability to input given data accurately and efficiently. The second test was the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), which assesses the candidate’s fundamental knowledge of computers. The Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) is no longer included in the SSC CGL selection process.

The test is part of the SSC CGL skill test, which is mandatory for certain posts. In the following article, we will provide details about SSC CGL Tier 2 DEST. Additionally, we will share important tips to help candidates excel in the tests.

What Are DEST and CPT In SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam?

The SSC CGL examination includes two tests that assess the candidate’s competency in various computer-related areas. The first test is called the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), which evaluates the candidate’s speed in data handling and their efficiency in inputting provided data. The second test is known as the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), which primarily assesses the candidate’s fundamental understanding of computer operations.

Starting from 2022, the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT), has been excluded from the SSC CGL Selection process. Previously, candidates aiming for positions such as Assistant Section Officer (CSS), Assistant Section Officer (MEA), Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under M/o Corporate Affairs, Assistant (GSI) in the Ministry of Mines, Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Preventive Officer), and Inspector (Examiner) were required to qualify in the CPT. The CPT consisted of three modules, namely Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Generation of slides.

    • Data Entry Speed Test (DEST):
      • The abbreviation DEST stands for “Data Entry Skill Test.” It primarily involves a typing test where candidates are required to complete 2000 key depressions within a duration of 15 minutes. This test focuses on assessing typing speed, which can be improved through practice. If we convert the number of key depressions into words per minute, it roughly equates to a typing speed of 26 words per minute.
      • It should be noted that DEST is a qualifying test and is mandatory to pass for all positions.
      • The Commission will conduct the DEST according to their determined guidelines. As it is a skill test, there is no specific syllabus provided. Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be communicated by the Commission’s Regional Offices.
  • Computer Proficiency Test (CPT):
    • The Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) was an essential part of the SSC selection process and was mandatory for all candidates. This exam was conducted online and aimed to assess the candidates’ proficiency in computer applications. The test is no longer a part of SSC CGL selection process.
    • The main topics on which the candidates were tested are:
    • Working with the Internet and Emails: This portion assesses candidates’ skills in web browsing, searching, downloading and uploading files, managing an email account, and e-banking.
    • Software: Candidates should have knowledge of the Windows Operating system, including the basics of Microsoft Office applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Computer Basics: This section covers the organization of a computer, the Central Processing Unit (CPU), input/output devices, computer memory, memory organization, backup devices, PORTs, Windows Explorer, and keyboard shortcuts.
    • Basics of Networking and Cybersecurity: Candidates should have an understanding of networking devices and protocols, as well as knowledge about network and information security threats (such as hacking, viruses, worms, Trojans) and preventive measures.

Types of Mistakes To Avoid In DEST

The Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) is specifically applicable to certain positions within SSC CGL, including Tax Assistant (Central Excise & Income Tax). Therefore candidates must not make any mistakes to perform well in the exam.

In the DEST, there is no provision for negative marking. However, candidates may face deductions for certain types of mistakes as outlined by SSC CGL. Deductions of half-marks or full-marks are made for specific types of mistakes.

Half Mistakes:

The following errors are categorised as half mistakes:

  • Incorrect capitalisation: Mistakes arising from using capital letters incorrectly for small letters or vice versa.
  • Letter repetition: Deductions are made for spelling errors caused by repeating, adding, transposing, omitting, or substituting letters. For example, if the word ‘spelling’ is typed as ‘seeplings.’
  • Spacing errors: This refers to the absence of space between two words, for instance, “ihave” instead of “i have.”

Full Mistakes:

The following errors are categorised as full mistakes:

  • Addition of words or figures that are not present in the given passage.
  • Omission of words or figures.
  • Substitution of incorrect words or figures.

Tips To Perform Well In DEST OF SSC CGL Tier 2

To perform well in the DEST (Data Entry Skill Test) of SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam, here are some helpful tips:

  • Practice Typing: Regularly practice typing to improve your speed and accuracy. Use online typing tutors or software to enhance your typing skills. Aim to type without looking at the keyboard to increase your efficiency.
  • Time Management: Since the DEST test has a specific time limit, it is crucial to manage your time effectively. Practice working on passages or data sets within the given time frame to develop a sense of timing and improve your speed.
  • Familiarise Yourself with Keyboard Shortcuts: Learn and familiarise yourself with commonly used keyboard shortcuts to expedite your data entry process. Efficient use of shortcuts can significantly save time and improve your overall performance.
  • Maintain Accuracy: While speed is important, accuracy is equally crucial. Focus on entering data correctly and avoid making unnecessary mistakes. Double-check your work whenever possible to minimise errors.
  • Read Instructions Carefully: Pay close attention to the instructions provided before starting the DEST test. Understand the formatting requirements, word limits, and any specific guidelines for data entry. Following instructions accurately will help you score better.

By following these tips and dedicating sufficient time for practice, candidates can improve their typing skills, time management, and accuracy, ultimately leading to a better performance in the DEST of the SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam.
