India is the center of the ancient healthcare system of Ayurveda and Ayurvedic education. As such, the Global Ayurveda Summit was initiated as a destination Ayurveda festival to present one of India’s oldest and native medicinal traditions to the global community.

The Government of India has been encouraging the sale and use of Ayurvedic medicine through Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) across the country. In the light of the recent Union Budget 2022-23, the Ministry of AYUSH saw a rise in fund allocation. The Ministry of Ayush has received an allocation of Rs 3,050 in the Union Budget 2022-23, a slight increase of 2.69 per cent from 2021-22 when Rs 2,970 crore was earmarked for it.

The Beginning of the Global Ayurveda Summit

Since its inception in 2010 by the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Global Ayurveda Summit has had a galvanizing effect on India’s Ayurvedic and tourism sector. The Global Ayurveda Summit is the annual international biennial get-together of the global Ayurveda fraternity. It is regarded as one of the largest global showcases of Ayurveda that is held anywhere across the world.

The Growth of Global Ayurveda Summit Kerala

In the past, Global Ayurveda Festival (GAF) was organised at Thiruvananthapuram from 9-14 February 2012, in Kochi from 21-25 February 2014, and Kozhikode from January 31 – Feb 2016. Since then, the Global Ayurveda Summit has put India on the global landscape of Ayurvedic healthcare and witnessed a notable rise in its delegate participation with every edition.

The eight-ten-day festival includes a mix of international seminars, global exhibitions, poster presentations, special pavilions of Ayurveda colleges and institutions, etc. The summit has witnessed participation from native and international delegates, scientists, and medical fraternity, among others from participating countries and institutions.

Since its commencement, the Global Ayurveda Summit Kerala has contributed immensely to make the state of Kerala the face of Indian Ayurvedic education and treatment.

Global Ayurveda Summit Kerala is organised by the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) in collaboration with the Government of Kerala—the hub of the native Ayurveda fraternity.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH), the Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI), Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers Organisation in India (AMMOI), Ayurveda Hospital Management Association (AHMA), Department of Tourism and the Department of Industry also play a central role in the organization of the GAF.

The GAF also garners the support of eminent international bodies such as National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) in the United States, Association of Swiss Ayurveda Doctors and Therapists in Switzerland, and Association for Ayurvedic Medicine in the Netherlands.

Global Ayurveda Summit 2020

Global Ayurveda Summit 2020 was scheduled to be held in Angamaly, Kerala, in May 2020. However, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, the fourth edition of Global Ayurveda Summit Kerala or the Global Ayurveda Summit 2020 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video conference between March 12 and March 19, 2021, in five virtual venues.
