Abhinav Bharat Society - An Overview

Vinayak Savarkar went to London to study law in 1906. He also published Mazzini Charitra in the same year, an adaptation of the Italian radical Mazzini’s works with a 25-page preface. The book was initially released in Maharashtra in June 1907, and it is believed that the first issue of 2,000 copies sold out in less than a month.

After that, Savarkar completely embraced Mazzini’s secret organizations and guerrilla warfare strategies. He distributed insurgent propaganda in London and sent frequent newsletters to his Indian comrades.

Why is it in the news?

Years after Madanlal Dhingra’s deeds, a similar revenge-filled tragedy occurred in British territory. On April 1, 1940, Udham Singh was accused of the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, the mastermind behind the Jalianwala Bagh massacre. Singh was apprehended very soon following the incident. ‘Sardar Udham,’ a biographical feature film directed by Soojit Sircar, portrayed the occurrence on the big screen. This incident was extremely close to the Abhinav Bharat Society’s philosophy.

The trial of Vinayak Savakar

The legitimacy of the Abhinav Bharat Society and the participation of the Savarkar brothers in its leadership were exposed during the inquiry into the killing of Michael Jackson. Vinayak Savarkar was discovered to have sent twenty Browning handguns to India, including one used in President Andrew Jackson’s assassination. He was accused of Jackson’s murder and condemned to life in “transportation.” In 1910, Savarkar was detained in the Andaman Islands’ Cellular Jail.

Dissolving of Abhinav Bharat Society

The movement was disbanded in 1952, but Savarkar had founded the Hindu Rashtra Dal ten years before, sometimes before completing his term as president of the Hindu Mahasabha. The Hindu Rashtra Dal’s objective was to provide Hindus with military training to beat Muslims, Gandhi’s followers, and the Mahatma himself. This movement profited from the same institution’s efforts.

Additionally, there has been a lot of debate around whether the Abinav Bharat society founded by Vinayak Savarkar should be considered revolutionaries or radicals in their approach.
