- Chandrakala hails from Garjanapally village in Andhra Pradesh and belongs to the ST category.
- Up to her 12th standard, she studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya in her hometown.
- Her father B Kishan, was a senior technician at a government fertiliser company. Her mother Lakshmi is an entrepreneur.
- She completed her graduation in Geography and her post-graduation in Economics from Hyderabad’s Osmania University.

- This gave her a lot of confidence to face the IAS exam.
B Chandrakala Prior Attempts
- Unfortunately, the first three attempts by Chandrakala in the UPSC exam drew blanks.
- But in her fourth attempt, she was able to clear the IAS exam and secure an all India rank of 409 in the year 2007.
- Her optional subjects were Geography and Public Administration.

Work as an IAS Officer
- Allocated the UP cadre, Chandrakala earned fame through her no-nonsense approach to work.
- She would reprimand government servants and authorities for any lapse in work or for using poor quality equipment, etc. in public places. Videos of her making surprise checks went viral on social media and made her quite a celebrity.
- Impressed by her good work, she was handpicked by the central government as director of Swachh Bharat Mission under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2017.
