Exercise TROPEX-23

In March 2023, the Indian Navy’s exercise “Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise for 2023” or TROPEX-23 culminated. In this context, know more about TROPEX-2023 for the UPSC exam defence and security segments.

Tropex 2022

It was conducted in the Arabian Sea. The exercise ran for four months, from November 2022 to March 2023.

• It was participated by approximately 70 Indian Navy ships, six submarines and over 75 aircraft.
• The overall exercise included the Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil and the Amphibious Exercise AMPHEX. 
• Together, these exercises also witnessed significant participation from the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard. 
• In its first phase, the Indian Navy conducted a coastal defense exercise ‘Sea Vigil’ along the entire coastline and Island territories of India.
• This tested the readiness of the coastal defense setup of the country which was completely overhauled after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Participation:

• Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Police of 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other stakeholders in the maritime domain participated in this exercise.

Range of the exercise:

• It was conducted in the Indian Ocean Region, including the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
• It covered approximately 4,300 nautical miles north to south up to 35 degrees South and 5,000 nautical miles from the Persian Gulf to the northern coast of Australia, extending over 21 million square nautical miles.

Why was the exercise conducted?

1. Warfare preparedness: It was conducted in the Indian Ocean Region and its adjunct water to test the navy’s warfare preparedness. It is crucial in the present geo-strategic situation.
2. Navy’s offensive-defense capabilities: To have a strong navy strength so as to protect national interests and promote peace in the Indian Ocean Region. 
3. Indian Navy is complimented for its readiness and for being at the forefront of the ‘Make in India’ Initiative and leveraging the path of Aatmanirbharta to be ‘Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive and Future Proof’.
