Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people on Utkal Dibasa.

Details:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi greeted the people of Odisha on the occasion of the Utkal Dibasa.
  • Utkal Divas, also called Utakala Dibasa or Utkal Diwas, is celebrated every year on 1st April by the people of Odisha. 
  • It is celebrated to commemorate the formation of Odisha state in 1936.
  • Notably, Odisha was part of the Bihar and Orissa province.
  • After three decades of revolutionary efforts, it was declared an independent state.
  • Utkal Dibasa acknowledges the rich role of Odisha, Odia people, and culture in the progress of our nation.

2. G20: Tourism Working Group (TWG) Meeting

Syllabus: GS2, International Relations

Mains: Global groupings and agreements involving India and/or affecting  India’s interests.

Prelims: TWG meeting.

Context:  The second Tourism Working Group Meeting. 

Details:

  • The 2nd Tourism Working Group Meeting under G20 was hosted by the Ministry of Tourism at Siliguri.
  • There was also a panel discussion on ‘Adventure Tourism as a vehicle for achieving Sustainable Development Goals’.
  • The delegates from Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, ATTA (Adventure Travel Trade Association), ATOAI (Adventure Tour Operators Association of India), and the Vik-run Foundation attended the panel discussion.
  • It was highlighted that India offers many avenues for adventure tourism across the four elements of land, water, sky, and air. For instance, it has 70% of the Himalayas, approximately 7000 km of coastline, about 700 sanctuaries, national parks, and tiger reserves.
  • The Union Minister for Culture, Tourism, and DoNER Shri G.K Reddy stated that India’s topography is conducive to a variety of adventure activities like trekking, water rafting, Mountaineering, Skiing, Scuba diving, wildlife safaris, etc.
  • It was further highlighted that Youth Tourism Clubs have been set up in educational institutions to create focused awareness about India’s natural, cultural, and spiritual heritage among the youth.
  • Moreover, these clubs can promote adventure tourism as youth have a natural affinity for adventure tourism.
  • The Minister also said that the National Adventure Tourism strategy has been framed. It emphasizes on following aspects:
    • State Ranking mechanism for the Adventure Tourism sites
    • Model Adventure Tourism Law
    • Development of Adventure Activity Guidelines
    • Advancement of dedicated Website and social media pages for promoting Adventure Tourism.
  • The meeting is attended by more than 130 participants from members of G20, Invitee Countries, International Organizations, Industry, state departments, etc.
