1. India’s first home-grown gene therapy for cancer

Mains: What is gene therapy? 

Context:

President launched India’s first home-grown gene therapy for cancer at IIT Bombay.

Details:

  • Developed by the IIT Bombay and the Tata Memorial Centre, this gene-based therapy will help cure different types of cancer. 
  • This NexCAR19 CAR T-cell therapy is the country’s first ‘Made in India’ CAR T-cell therapy, which will significantly bring down the cost of cancer treatment.
  • This treatment has been rolled out at approximately one-tenth of the price it is available outside India (where it costs approximately Rs 4 crores).
  • CAR T-cell therapy is considered one of the phenomenal advances in medical sciences. It has been available in advanced nations for some time, however, it is extremely expensive.
  • Now, this NexCAR 19 CAR T-cell therapy provides hope to many cancer patients in India and elsewhere.

2. Exercise Gagan Shakti-24

Context:

As part of the ongoing exercise Gagan Shakti-24, Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft operated from the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in the northern sector in Kashmir valley. 

Exercise Gagan Shakti-24:

  • It is a ten-day exercise during which the IAF will test its capabilities and preparedness for high-intensity operations.
  • As part of the exercise, the IAF will mobilize all its bases and assets across the country.
  • The Indian Army will provide logistics support for the mega exercise, facilitating a comprehensive pan-India movement of approximately 10,000 IAF personnel and ammunition in order to validate the Operational Rail Mobilisation Plan (ORMP) aspects of the IAF.
  • The exercise is being conducted at various locations across the country, including the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer.
  • It was last held in 2018, during which the IAF completed over 11,000 sorties during the two-phase air manoeuvres.

3. Army Medical Corps

Prelims: Army Medical Corps

Context:

Army Medical Corps celebrated its 260th Raising Day.

About the Army Medical Corps:

  • Raised in 1764, the Army Medical Corps is a specialist corps in the Indian Army, which primarily provides medical services to all Army personnel, serving and veterans, along with their families.
  • Its motto is ‘Sarve Santu Niramaya’ meaning ‘let all be free from disease’.
  • The Army Medical Corps came into existence as a homogeneous corps of officers and men on the pattern of the Royal Army Medical Corps on 3 Apr 1943 by the amalgamation of the Indian Medical Service, the Indian Medical Department and the Indian Hospital & Nursing Corps.

 


4. Ballistic Missile Agni-Prime

Prelims: Missile Agni-Prime

Context:

New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni-Prime successfully flight-tested by Strategic Forces Command & DRDO off the Odisha coast.

Details:

  • Agni Prime or Agni-P is a two-stage canisterized solid propellant ballistic missile with redundant dual navigation and guiding systems.
  • It is a canisterized surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a 1,000–2,000 km range capability.
  • The Agni-P is an upgraded version of the Agni class that was developed as part of the IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme).
