1. 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention 2023

Context: 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention will be organized from 8th January 2023.

Details:

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention is the flagship event of the Indian Government, which provides a platform to engage and connect with overseas Indians. It enables the interaction of the diaspora with each other. 
  • The 17th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention is being organized in partnership with the Madhya Pradesh Government from 8 to 10 January 2023 in Indore. 
  • The theme of the Convention is “Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”. 
  • Around 3,500 members from nearly seventy countries have registered for the Convention.
  • The convention will have three segments:
    • The Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be inaugurated on 8 January 2023. Ms. Zaneta Mascarenhas, Member of Parliament of Australia, will be the Guest of Honour at the event.
    • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the PBD convention on 09 January 2023. The event will feature the addresses of the Chief Guest Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and the Special Guest of Honour Mr. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname.
    • President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu will confer Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2023 and preside over the Valedictory Session on 10 January 2023.
  • A Commemorative Postal Stamp ‘Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen’ will also be released highlighting the significance of safe, legal, orderly, and skilled migration. 
  • Moreover, the first-ever digital PBD Exhibition will also be organized. The exhibition’s theme is “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle”. 
  • The convention will have 5 thematic plenary sessions namely:
    • Role of Diaspora Youth in Innovations and new Technologies.
    • Role of Indian Diaspora in promoting Indian Healthcare Eco-system in Amrit Kaal: Vision @2047.
    • Leveraging the soft power of India – Goodwill through craft, cuisine & creativity.
    • Enabling global mobility of Indian workforce – Role of Indian Diaspora
    • Harnessing the potential of diaspora entrepreneurs towards an inclusive approach to nation-building.
  • The convention is significant as it is being organized as a physical event after a gap of four years and first after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic
  • It should be noted that the last PBD Convention (2021) was held virtually.

2. Startup India Innovation Week

Prelims: Startup India Innovation Week.

Context: Startup India Innovation Week will be organized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

Details:

  • Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry is about to organize Startup India Innovation Week from 10th January 2023 to 16th January 2023.
  • It is being organized under the ambit of the Government of India’s flagship programme Startup India.
  • The event is being organized to celebrate the Indian Startup Ecosystem apart from National Startup Day (16th January).
  • Startup India Innovation Week 2023 intends to engage all the stakeholders of the startup ecosystem from 10th January to 16th January 2023 and spur the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in India.
  • The event will incorporate Knowledge Sharing Sessions for existing and aspiring entrepreneurs, and other enablers, involving relevant stakeholders like Government officials, incubators, corporates, and investors.
  • On National Startup Day (16th January 2023), DPIIT will felicitate the winners of the National Startup Awards 2022 across different sectors, sub-sectors, and categories.
  • As a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, several startup-related events will also be organized in more than 75 places in the country to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. These events include dedicated workshops for women entrepreneurs, training and mentorship workshops, conferences, capacity-building workshops, startup pitching sessions, etc.

3. India’s First Festival of Inclusion

Syllabus: GS 2, Polity and Governance.

Mains: Government policies and interventions.

Prelims: First festival of inclusion, purple fest.

Context: India’s first Festival of Inclusion was inaugurated in Goa. 

Details:

  • India’s first-of-its-kind inclusivity,  ‘Purple Fest: Celebrating Diversity’ was inaugurated in Goa.
  • The aim of the festival is to display how we can come together to create a welcoming and inclusive world for everyone.
  • Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar also inaugurated a two-day sensitization workshop on “Issues relating to Empowerment of persons with Disabilities” in association with the Purple Festival in Goa.
  • The aim of the workshop was to sensitize the Government, Corporate Sector, and other stakeholders about their role in creating an inclusive society and to ensure a coordinated approach toward the empowerment of Divyangjan. 
  • It was highlighted during the event that with the introduction of Purple Fest, Goa will establish a milestone in Divyangjan empowerment. 
  • The unique purple festival has the potential to go a long way in furthering the agenda of inclusivity. Such festivities also boost the confidence of persons with disabilities and sensitize society toward their needs and issues. It further gives a new direction to the growth and development of society.
