1. Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD)

Context – The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

About PBD –

  • 9th January commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915. To mark this day, the tradition of celebrating Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) started in 2003. The first PBD Convention was organised on 9 January 2003 to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.
  • Since 2015, under a revised format, PBD Convention has been organised once every 2 years.
  • The 16th PBD was conducted in a virtual setting with the theme “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat” in 2021 during the pandemic.

Details

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention is the flagship event of the Government of India that provides an important platform to engage and connect with overseas Indians and enable the diaspora to interact with each other.
  • The Prime Minister released a commemorative postal stamp ‘Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen’ and also inaugurated the first-ever digital PBD Exhibition on the theme ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle’.
  • The theme of the 17th PBD is ‘Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal’.
  • Over 3500 diaspora members from about 70 different countries have registered for the 17th PBD.
  • The 17th PBD is being organised physically after a gap of four years. The 16th PBD was held virtually in 2021.
  • The 17th PBD will have five thematic plenary sessions-
    1. Role of Diaspora Youth in Innovations and new Technologies.
    2. Role of Indian Diaspora in promoting Indian Healthcare Ecosystem in Amrit Kaal: Vision @2047
    3. Leveraging the soft power of India – Goodwill through craft, cuisine & creativity.
    4. Enabling global mobility of Indian workforce – Role of Indian Diaspora.
    5. Harnessing the potential of diaspora entrepreneurs towards an inclusive approach to nation building.

2. Aero India – 2023

Prelims – 14th Aero Show – Aero India 2023.

Context – The Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh chaired the Ambassadors Roundtable Conference for the forthcoming Aero India 2023.

Details

  • The 14th Aero Show – Aero India 2023 will be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka (13th-17th February 2023). The Raksha Mantri invited representatives from across the world to attend Asia’s largest – 14th Aero Show- Aero India 2023. The theme for the event is ‘The runway to a billion opportunities’. Over  645 exhibitors have registered for the event, with 80 countries confirming their participation.
  • The minister said that a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem has been created which has led to the emergence of India as a leading defence exporter in recent years. The defence exports have grown by eight times in the last five years and now India is exporting to over 75 countries.
  • The Aero India exhibition is a prestigious international trade event that gives the international arms industry a chance to engage with India’s developing aerospace and defence industry as well as to present their goods, technology, & solutions to the Indian military and decision-makers.

3. National Science Day, 2023

Prelims – National Science Day, February 28.

Context – The Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh unveils the theme of the National Science Day 2023, “Global Science for Global Wellbeing”.

Details

  • National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated annually on 28th February to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel laureate and Physicist CV Raman on this day in 1928.
  • The theme, “Global Science for Global Wellbeing” is in tune with India assuming the G20 presidency, where India will become the voice of the Global South, comprising developing countries of Asia, Africa and South America.
  • DST acts as a nodal agency to support, catalyse and coordinate the celebration of National Science Day throughout the country in scientific institutions, research laboratories and autonomous scientific institutions.
