1. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY)

Prelims – PMGKAY
Context – The Union Cabinet approved the new integrated food security scheme – Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY).
Details –
- Keeping in view the welfare of the beneficiaries and to maintain uniformity across the states, free food grains will be provided under PMGKAY for the year 2023 to all PHH (Primary Household) and AAY (Antodaya Ann Yojana) beneficiaries as per NFSA.
- The new scheme, PMGKAY will strengthen the provisions of NFSA (National Food Security Act), 2013 in terms of affordability, accessibility and availability of food grains for the poor.
- The new scheme started on January 1, 2023, benefiting more than 80 cr poor people.
- The Central Government will spend more than Rs 2 lakh crore in 2023 as food subsidy under NFSA and other welfare schemes, to remove the financial burden of the poor.
- The basic concept of food security across the globe is to ensure that all people, at all times, should get access to basic food for their active and healthy life and is characterised by the availability, access, utilisation and stability of food. Though the Indian Constitution does not have any explicit provision regarding the right to food, the fundamental right to life enshrined in Article 21 of the Constitution may be interpreted to include the right to live with human dignity, which may include the right to food and other basic amenities.

2. Multi-State Cooperative Societies

Context – The Union Cabinet approved the setting up of 3 national-level multi-state cooperative societies under Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act, 2002.
Details –
- The Union Cabinet approved 3 multi-state cooperative societies at the national level:
- Multi-State Co. Seed Society
- Multi-State Co. Organic society
- Multi-State Co. Export Society
- The multi-state Co. Seed Society would act as an apex organisation for the production, procurement, processing, branding, labelling, packaging, storage, marketing and distribution of quality seeds; strategic research & development; and to develop a system for preservation and promotion of indigenous natural seeds; through various cooperative societies across the country.
- The multi-state Co. Organic Society will manage various activities related to the organic sector by providing certified and authentic organic products. It will help in unlocking the demand and consumption potential of organic products in domestic as well as global markets. This society will also help cooperatives and ultimately their farmer members in getting benefits of the high price of organic products through aggregation, branding and marketing on a large scale by facilitating testing and certification at affordable cost.
- The Multi-state Co. Export Society will provide thrust to exports from the cooperative sector by acting as an umbrella organisation for carrying out and promoting exports. This will help unlock the export potential of Indian cooperatives in global markets. This proposed society will also help cooperatives in getting benefits of various export-related schemes and policies of different ministries of the Government of India in a focussed manner through ‘Whole of Government Approach’.

Context– The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi congratulated the entire team of the film ‘RRR’ on winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song ‘Naatu Naatu’.
Details –
- The Golden Globe Awards are awards presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to recognize outstanding achievements in the film and television industries.
- S.S Rajamouli-directed RRR bagged the Golden Globe Award for Original song, “Naatu Naatu”. The song was composed by music director M.M Keeravani.
- However, the movie failed to secure the trophy for Best motion picture Non-English and lost to “Argentine, 1985”.
