Context – Naming of 21 islands of Andaman & Nicobar islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.

Details

  • January 23  is observed as Parakram Diwas – the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to inspire students and instil in them the spirit of patriotism.
    • To honour Netaji and his contribution to the freedom struggle of India, the Central Government had announced January 23rd as Parakram Diwas, beginning from 2021. 
  • On Parakram Diwas Shri Narendra Modi virtually participated in a ceremony to name the 21 largest unnamed islands of Andaman & Nicobar Islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees. The Prime Minister also unveiled the model of the National Memorial dedicated to Netaji to be built on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose  Dweep (island where Netaji stayed during the freedom movement).
  • Param Vir Chakra is the highest military decoration, awarded for showing distinguished valour during times of war. The islands will be named in chronological order, i.e. the largest island will be named after the first Param Vir Chakra awardee and the second largest after the second, and so on.
  • During the Prime Minister’s visit in 2018, Ross Islands was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island and Havelock Island were also renamed Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep.

2. SCO Film Festival

Syllabus – GS2, Regional/ global groupings and agreements involving  India.

Prelims – SCO Film Festival.

Context -SCO Film Festival is scheduled to be held in Mumbai.

Details 

  • SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) is scheduled to be held in Mumbai from January 27 – 31.
  • India is chairing the  Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) council of heads of state for a year from September 2022. India joined SCO in 2017. The SCO Film Festival is being organised by the SCO Council of Head of States in association with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting through National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).
  • The objective of this film festival is to build cinematic partnerships and have an exchange of programmes and also nurture young filmmaking talent and act as a bridge between the cultures. 
  • The festival will showcase films of the SCO countries in the Competition and Non-Competition screenings. The Competition section is for the SCO Member States only and comprises various prestigious awards like Best Feature Film, Best Actor (Male), Best Actor (Female), Best Director (Feature Film), Special Jury Award. The Non-competition section is for all SCO countries, viz. Member States and also Observer States and Dialogue Partners States. 
  • A Total 57 Films will be showcased at the SCO Film Festival from SCO countries. In the Competition Section, 14 feature films are competing and will be screened and the Non-Competition section will showcase 43 Films.
  • Marathi movie ‘Godavari’ and Gujarati movie ‘Chello Show’ will compete with 12 other films from the SCO member nations.

3. India’s G20 Presidency: B20 India Inception Meeting

Context – B20 India Inception Meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Details

  • The Business 20 (B20) is amongst the most prominent official engagement groups in G20 with companies, business associations and multilateral organisations as participants.
    • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been formally designated as the B20 secretariat by the Government of India to lead and host B20 during India’s G20 presidency. 
  • At the fourth plenary session of B20 India Inception Meeting on Building Resilient Global Value Chains, Shri Piyush Goyal- The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, said large Companies must take responsibility to handhold MSMEs, help them adapt best practices and integrate them into the supply chain ecosystem.
  • American tech giant Apple inc does about 7% of its manufacturing in India and are targeting up to 25%. As Apple’s manufacturing plant comes up, thousands of MSMEs units will flourish in the ecosystem as mini value chain suppliers to Apple.
  •  Shri Goyal said, the Government is also focusing on creating an enabling ecosystem that is simpler, faster and promotes ease of doing business. He emphasised that setting global benchmarks, harmonising Indians standards with global standards, and consumers becoming more demanding of quality are essential for India to become a global key player.
