1. National Doctors’ Day

Context:

July 1 is observed as National Doctors’ Day in India.

About the National Doctors’ Day:

• The day is observed in memory of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, who had his birth and death anniversary on the same day (1 July).
• The day is dedicated to all the doctors and healthcare workers who have been serving people by risking their lives.
• Dr Roy (1 July 1882 – 1 July 1962), former Chief Minister of Bengal, was known for his selfless service.
  • He was also referred to as the first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India and was more successful and dedicated than his contemporaries in several fields, mentioned the British Medical Journal.
  • For his outstanding contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961.
• The day is being celebrated in India since 1991.

2. Chartered Accountants’ Day

Context:

July 1 is observed as Chartered Accountants’ Day (CA Day).

About CA Day:

• The day is marked to commemorate the founding of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1949, one of the oldest professional institutes in the country.

About the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI):

• ICAI is India’s national professional accounting body and also the second biggest accounting organization in the world.
• It is the sole licensing and regulatory body for the financial audit and accounting profession in India, and its recommendations are followed by everyone – from the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) to companies and accounting organizations.
• The ICAI is a statutory body for regulating the accounting profession in India.
• It functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
• The affairs of the ICAI are managed by a Council in accordance with the provisions of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 and the Chartered Accountants Regulations, 1988.

3. Crop Insurance Week

Context:

Agriculture Minister launched the Crop Insurance Awareness Campaign for Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) during the Crop Insurance Week.

Details:

• The Minister also flagged off IEC vans which will continue to engage the farmers on the PMFBY throughout the crop insurance week.
• He also launched PMBFY e-brochure, FAQ booklet and a guidebook to assist farmers and on ground coordinators to understand the scheme, its benefits and the process of crop insurance.
• Throughout the week, the campaign will cover all notified areas/districts under Kharif 2021 season, with special focus on 75 Aspirational/Tribal districts.

4. OxyJani

Context:

Indian researchers have designed a robust, mobile group oxygen concentrator that has been named ‘OxyJani’.

Team behind OxyJani:

• Researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Background:

• The second wave of COVID-19 led to an acute shortage of medical oxygen.
• The crisis exposed the chronic lack of medical oxygen infrastructure in the country, especially in the smaller cities and villages.
• The crisis required 500 LPM Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) plants for large hospitals.
• While the 500 LPM (litres per minute) plants for hospitals were robust, they lacked the portability required for deployment on resource-poor settings, while personal concentrators were too fragile to be used on a sustained basis in a hospital setting.
• This created a need for a robust technology with necessary portability.

About OxyJani:

• OxyJani is based on the principles of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology.
• The team replaced lithium zeolites (LiX) which is usually used in oxygen concentrators, with sodium zeolites which does not generate toxic solid waste and can be manufactured in India.
• Although the science behind using sodium here is well understood, the development of this device posed huge engineering challenges.
• OxyJani concentrator is modular and capable of delivering a range of solutions, conversion of medical air to medical oxygen, and is an entirely off-grid solution including all modules that can facilitate deployment in rural areas.
• Additionally, the waste generated from the concentrator has the potential to be used as an agricultural input material.
