1. SAFF Championship 2023

Syllabus: Miscellaneous (Sports)

Prelims: SAFF Championship

Context:

The Indian football team won the SAFF Championship 2023.

Details:

  • The SAFF Championship is the main international association football competition of the men’s national football teams governed by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF).
  • The event was first held in 1993 and is held once every two years.
  • The teams that compete in this tournament are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Maldives and Bhutan.
  • The 2023 tournament was held in India and the final match was held between India and Kuwait. Kuwait and Lebanon were invited as guest teams.

2. DGCA MoU with European Union Aviation Safety Agency

Prelims: Directorate General of Civil Aviation 

Mains: Civil aviation in India, safety issues.

Context:

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) (India) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for cooperation in Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Innovative Air Mobility. 

Details:

  • The MoU will focus on collaboration on unmanned aircraft and innovative air mobility between the two civil aviation authorities.
  • Collaboration is also envisaged in the areas of development of certification standards and environmental standards and related requirements for the certification and use of unmanned aircraft systems and innovative air mobility operations.
    • This includes licensing of personnel, training, air traffic management and infrastructure, including Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) standards and services.
  • Apart from the regular sharing of information between the two entities, the MoU will also entail collaboration in conducting conferences, workshops, etc.

3. JIMEX-23

Mains: India – Japan ties

Context:

Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2023 (JIMEX 23) is being held in Vishakhapatnam in July 2023.

About JIMEX-23:

  • This is the seventh edition of the bilateral exercise being conducted between the navies of the two countries.
  • The exercise will be conducted over six days in two phases – a Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam comprising professional, sports and social interactions, after which, the two navies will jointly hone their warfighting skills at sea and enhance their interoperability through complex multi-discipline operations in the surface, sub-surface and air domains.
  • Participating from India are
    • INS Delhi, India’s first indigenously built Guided Missile Destroyer
    • INS Kamorta, an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette
    • Fleet tanker INS Shakti
    • A submarine
    • Maritime patrol aircraft P8I and Dornier
    • Ship-borne helicopters and fighter aircraft

4. Scheme for Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services in the States

Syllabus: GS-3, Disaster and disaster management

Prelims: NDRF, Scheme for Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services in the States

Context:

Ministry of Home Affairs launched the “Scheme for Expansion and Modernization of Fire Services in the States” with a total outlay of Rs.5,000 Crore.

Details:

  • The objective of the scheme is to expand and modernize Fire Services in the States with a view that activities for strengthening fire services at the State-level through preparedness and a capacity-building component of the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) will be ensured.
  • For seeking funds for the projects/proposals under the Scheme, the concerned State Governments shall have to contribute 25% (except for the North-Eastern and Himalayan (NEH) States which shall contribute 10%) of the total cost of such projects/proposals from their budgetary resources.
  • The scheme has stemmed from the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission.

5. Gramodyog Vikas Yojana (GVY)

Syllabus: GS-2, Government policies and interventions for development in various sectors 

Prelims: Gramodyog Vikas Yojana

Context:

Delhi Lieutenant Governor distributed Honey Bee-Boxes and Toolkits to 130 beneficiaries under ‘Gramodyog Vikas Yojana’.

About Gramodyog Vikas Yojana:

  • It is a scheme for the promotion and development of village industries through common facilities, technological modernization, training, etc. & other support and services for the promotion of village industries.
  • The scheme involves the following verticals:
    • Wellness & Cosmetics Industry (WCI)
    • Handmade Paper, Leather & Plastic Industry (HPLPI)
    • Agro-Based & Food Processing Industry (ABFPI)
    • Mineral Based Industry (MBI)
    • Rural Engineering & New Technology Industry (RENTI)
    • Service Industry
  • It is a central sector scheme.

6. MS Act 2013

Syllabus: GS-2, Welfare schemes for vulnerable sections of the population by the Centre and States and the performance of these schemes; mechanisms, laws, institutions and Bodies constituted for the protection and betterment of these vulnerable sections.

Mains: MS Act, 2013, Manual scavenging in India

Context:

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment organised the Eighth Meeting of the Central Monitoring Committee to review the Implementation of the MS Act 2013.

Details:

  • The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013 or the MS Act was passed by Parliament in 2013 and came into force in 2014.
  • Objective of the act – The complete elimination of manual scavenging in its various manifestations and comprehensive rehabilitation of the identified manual scavengers.
  • It was discussed during the meeting that using the mobile app “Swachhata Abhiyaan” launched in 2020, anyone can upload the data of insanitary latrines still existing and manual scavengers associated with them. 
    • The Committee noted that every alleged such instance uploaded on the App over the past 3 years had been individually investigated and no evidence of the existence of any insanitary latrines or manual scavenging was found.
  • The Ministry conducted two surveys of manual scavengers in 2013 and 2018 to identify eligible manual scavengers who were given one-time cash assistance of Rs 40000.
  • Some were also given skill development training.
  • To eliminate hazardous cleaning, stop the deaths of sewer and septic tank workers and ensure their safety and dignity, the ministry also launched the NAMASTE Scheme.
