1. Muslim World League

Prelims: Muslim World League

Context:

The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League called on the Indian President Smt Draupadi Murmu.

Muslim World League:

  • The Muslim World League is an international NGO headquartered in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with members from all Islamic countries and sects.
  • According to its website, it is engaged in various humanitarian activities, promotes friendly relations and cooperation among all, and wards off movements calling for extremism, violence and exclusion for a world full of peace, justice and coexistence.
  • It was formed in 1962.

2. Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB)

Syllabus: GS-2, Important International institutions, agencies and fora – their structure, mandate. 

Prelims: Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB); Election Commission of India

Context:

Chief Election Commissioner participates in the 11th meeting of the Executive Board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB).

Details:

  • In the meeting, the CEC opined that A-WEB as a global association plays a critical role in fostering cooperation among Election Management Bodies thereby enabling learning from each other’s experiences and best practices.

3. BHARAT (Banks Heralding Accelerated Rural & Agriculture Transformation)

Syllabus: GS-3, Economy

Prelims: BHARAT initiative

Context:

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare launched a new campaign for banks under Agri Infra Fund titled BHARAT (Banks Heralding Accelerated Rural & Agriculture Transformation). 

About BHARAT:

  • This is a month-long campaign ending on 15 August 2023 launched with a target of Rs 7200 crore.
  • As part of the campaign, the Ministry has asked banks to promote Rs 1 lakh crore Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) for the creation of necessary infrastructure in the farm sector.
  • The AIF is a financing facility launched in July 2020 for the creation of post-harvest management infrastructure and community farm assets.
  • Under this scheme, Rs 1 lakh crore is to be disbursed by financial year 2025-26 and the interest subvention and credit guarantee assistance will be given till the year 2032-33.

4. SAGAR SAMPARK

Syllabus: GS-3, Security

Prelims: SAGAR SAMPARK; DGNSS; DGLL

Context:

Union Minister inaugurated ‘SAGAR SAMPARK’, an indigenous Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS) to strengthen the maritime sector.

About SAGAR SAMPARK:

    • DGNSS is a terrestrial-based enhancement system which corrects the errors and inaccuracies in the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) allowing for more accurate positioning information.
    • The SAGAR SAMPARK DGNSS has been launched in six locations under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).
    • This is expected to enhance the capability of the DGLL in the field of radio aids to marine navigation.
  • Significance:
    • The DGNSS service will help mariners in safe navigation and will reduce the risk of collisions, groundings, and accidents in the port and harbour areas. This will lead to the safe & efficient movement of vessels.
  • After recapitalization with multiple satellite constellations like GPS and Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), DGNSS further increases the availability and redundancy as per international standards and helps mariners to improve their positioning within 5 meters.

Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL):

  • The Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships is a subordinate office under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. 
  • It provides general aid to marine navigation along the Indian coast.
  • It offers visual and radio aid to marine navigators.
    • Visual aids: lighthouses, light vessels, buoys and beacons
    • Radio aids: DGPS, RACONs etc.
  • The organisation’s mission is to help mariners and local fishermen to navigate safely on Indian waters.
  • DGLL is headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

5. Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana

Syllabus: GS-2, Welfare schemes for vulnerable sections of the population by the Centre

Prelims: Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana

Context:

Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana is a scheme aimed at empowering senior citizens of the country.

About Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana:

  • The scheme was formerly known as the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrC).
  • It was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • This scheme recognizes the invaluable contribution made by the elderly to society and seeks to ensure their well-being and social inclusion. 
  • By recognizing the invaluable contributions of the elderly to society, the government aims to empower and uplift them, ensuring their active participation and inclusion in all aspects of life.
  • It is a centrally sponsored umbrella scheme under which some of the programmes are as under:
    • Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC): Provides financial assistance to eligible organizations for running and maintaining Senior Citizen Homes/Continuous Care Homes to improve the quality of life of senior citizens, especially indigent senior citizens by providing basic amenities, entertainment opportunities and by encouraging productive and active ageing.
    • Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY): Provides eligible senior citizens suffering from any of the age-related disability/infirmity, with assisted living devices which can restore near normalcy in their bodily functions, overcoming the disability/infirmity manifested such as low vision, hearing impairment, loss of teeth and loco-motor disabilities. 
  • There is a national helpline for the elderly called ‘Elderline for Senior Citizens’ which is 14567. 
    • It provides free information, guidance, emotional support and field intervention in cases of abuse and rescues in order to improve the quality of life of senior citizens.
