2. IndiaSkills 2024
Syllabus: GS-3, Economy
Prelims: IndiaSkills 2024
Context:
The IndiaSkills Competition 2024 – the country’s biggest skill competition designed to demonstrate the highest skilling standards – is set to commence on 15th May 2024.Â
About IndiaSkills 2024:
- The event is organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
- It is expected that over 900 students from more than 30 states and Union Territories and over 400 industry experts will participate in the event.
- The four-day-long IndiaSkills will allow participants to showcase their diverse skills and talent on a national platform across 61 skills – from traditional crafts to cutting-edge technologies.Â
- While 47 skills competitions will be held onsite, 14 will be held offsite in Karnataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.
- The students will also participate in 9 exhibition skills such as Drone-Film making, Textile-Weaving, Leather-Shoemaking, and prosthetics-makeup.
- Winners of IndiaSkills, with the help of the best industry trainers, will get prepared for the WorldSkills Competition scheduled to take place in Lyon, France in September 2024, which will bring together 1,500 competitors from over 70 countries.
3. Biomass Cultivation on Degraded Land for Green Biohydrogen Production
Syllabus: GS-3, Environment & Ecology
Mains: Green biohydrogen production in India
Context:
Principal Scientific Adviser to the GoI Chairs Meeting to Discuss Biomass Cultivation on Degraded Land for Green Biohydrogen Production.
Details:
- The meeting brought together key stakeholder government ministries, knowledge partners, and research institutes to explore the utilisation of degraded, barren, and uncultivated lands for biomass cultivation.Â
- This biomass will be used to produce green biohydrogen, initiating a comprehensive discussion series among stakeholders to prepare an action plan for enhancing green hydrogen production from biomass.
Background:Â
- One of the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission is to initiate focused pilots for biomass-based green biohydrogen production.Â
- The meeting aimed to gather inputs on biomass and degraded land availability, identify gaps and challenges in biomass cultivation, and strategise a roadmap for using degraded land for green hydrogen production.
Generating green hydrogen from biomass:
- Even though hydrogen is a clean fuel, when produced from fossil fuels, its significance as a clean fuel is limited.
- However, hydrogen produced from renewable sources is emission-free and considered a green fuel.
- One of the best ways to produce hydrogen from renewable sources is by using biomass.
- Biomass includes agriculture crop residues, forest residues, special crops grown specifically for energy use (such as switchgrass or willow trees), organic municipal solid waste, and animal wastes.Â
- This renewable resource can be used to produce hydrogen, along with other byproducts, by gasification.
- In India, biomass is abundantly available since it is a predominantly agricultural country.
- Apart from generating hydrogen, the other advantages of using biomass include supplementing farmer incomes, reducing air pollution (because of reduced stubble burning) and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
