1. PM addresses the World Health Assembly

Details:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the 76th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • During his address PM congratulated the World Health Organization on completing 75 years.
  • He emphasized on greater collaboration in the healthcare sector for building resilient global systems and boosting global health equity.
  • He also highlighted India’s role in international cooperation like the shipping of 300 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to over 100 countries.
  • The traditional system of Yoga and Ayurveda was also mentioned during the speech.
  • The address concluded by stating that India is committed to building a healthier world.

2. Rising cases of Lumpy Skin Disease in Kalimpong and Darjeeling

Details:

  • The Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has directed prompt action against the surging cases of Lumpy Skin Disease(LSD) in Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
    • LSD is a viral disease that affects cattle. 
    • It is transmitted by blood-feeding insects, such as certain species of flies and mosquitoes, or ticks.
    • It causes fever, nodules on the skin and can also lead to the death of the cattle.
  • Various measures are being taken by the government to control the spread of the disease. These measures include:
    • Surveillance: Diagnostic facilities are made available in different regions. Moreover, financial support is also provided for the surveillance activity.
    • Vaccination: An advisory has been issued to states to regularly hold vaccination programmes for both preventive and curative care.
    • Monitoring: A team will be constituted to visit the affected area and assess the ground situation for the containment of LSD at the desired time frame.
