1. LeadIT Summit 2022 (COP27, Egypt)

Context – India and Sweden hosted the LeadIT Summit 2022 at COP27.

Details

  • The LeadIT (Leadership for Industry Transition) Summit 2022, was hosted by India and Sweden at COP27, Egypt.
  • The LeadIT initiative focuses on the low carbon transition of the hard-to-abate industrial sector. Shri Bhupendra Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change represented India.
  • The minister spoke about the activities of LeadIT with a special focus on the road mapping exercise that was undertaken for the cement and steel sector in India.
  • The low carbon transition of the industrial sector apart from reducing greenhouse emissions serves other important purposes which include increasing resilience to changes in climate, innovation, enhanced energy security, socio-economic development and job creation.
  • The event included round-table discussions with a focus on finance and other cross-sectoral issues. 
  • The current phase of LeadIT is set to conclude in 2023.
  • The summit concluded with the adoption of a summit statement by LeadIT members. It re-emphasized the goal to pursue the low carbon transition of the industry.
  • The summit was followed by the public launch of the LeadIT Summit Statement 2022 in the India Pavilion at COP27. 

About LeadIT –

  • The Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) was launched by the governments of India and Sweden at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019. LeadIT is supported by the World Economic Forum.
  • LeadIT gathers countries and companies that are committed to action to achieve the Paris Agreement.
  • Low carbon pathways to achieve net zero carbon emissions are the ultimate aim of the members of the LeadIT.

2. Yudh Abhyas, 2022

Syllabus – GS3, Various Security forces and agencies and their mandate. 

Prelims – Bilateral Military Exercise- Yudh Abhyas.

Context – Indo-US joint training exercise.

Details

  • Yudh Abhyas is a joint military exercise, bilaterally occurring between India and the US.
  • The 18th edition of Yudh Abhyas is scheduled to be conducted in Uttarakhand in November 2022.
  • Its 17th edition was held at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska (USA) in October 2021.
  • This bilateral exercise is conducted annually with the aim to exchange best practices, techniques, procedures, and tactics between the armies of the two nations.
  • In the exercise, Indian Army soldiers from the Assam Regiment will participate while the US Army will be represented by the soldiers of the 2nd Brigade of the 11th Airborne Division.
  • The exercise will focus on peacekeeping, peace enforcement and will also include Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
  • The exercise will also involve unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and techniques to counter them, as well as information operations.

3. BASIC Ministerial Meet, COP27

Context – BASIC Ministerial Meet at COP27, Egypt.

Details

  • Ministers of Brazil, South Africa, India and China representing the BASIC Group met at COP27 in Egypt.
  • The ministers pledged their full support to the Egyptian COP27 Presidency for a successful conference. They emphasised the principle of common but different responsibilities and respective capabilities, in light of national circumstances.
  • Despite the enormous developmental challenges and pressures to eradicate poverty, the BASIC countries continue to lead from the front to deal with climate issues. 
  • Shri Bhupendra Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment emphasised that all countries are entitled to their fair share of the global carbon budget and must stay within this in their cumulative emission. 
  • The Long Term Low Emission (LT LEDS) Development Strategy submitted to UNFCCC aims to achieve NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) goals by 2030.
