Context – UAE holds first World Media Congress.
Details –
- The Secretary, Ministry of Information Broadcasting Shri Apurva Chandra congratulated the United Arab Emirates for holding the first-ever such Congress. He said that India has over 1.2 billion mobile phone users and 600 million smartphone users. This penetration of smartphones has resulted in users consuming a high amount of information and entertainment via mobile devices.
- Indian media comprises 897 television channels, out of which 350 are news channels and there are over 80 thousand newspapers coming out in different languages. Recently there has been a shift towards new media with youngsters consuming information from this new media.
- The World Media Congress will be a new global platform that will shape the future of the media industry through international media cooperation.
- The role of the congress is influential at the regional and international levels in shaping the future and trends of the media and creating more innovative and creative media ideas and initiatives.
Prelims – National Press Day – 16th November.
Context – The Press Council of India celebrated National Press Day on the theme “The Media’s Role in Nation Building”.
Details –
- November 16 was the day on which the Press Council of India started functioning as a moral watchdog. The body was formed to make sure that the press maintains the standards of journalism and is not influenced by the powerful. This year marks the 56th anniversary of the Press Council of India’s foundation.
- The Press Council of India was first established in the year 1966 by the Parliament of India, recommended by the first Press Commission. Currently, the function of the council is governed under the Press Council Act, 1978. It is a statutory, quasi-judicial body which acts as the watchdog of the press.
- Shri Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Youth Affairs and Sports, released the “Norms of Journalistic Conduct, 2022”, at the event.
- The Press Council of India hosts a number of seminars and workshops to discuss the difficulties the Indian press faces as well as to increase the public’s education on a variety of topics in honour of National Press Day.
- Press is the 4th pillar of democracy and it is not just news but it also ensures that the government policies and schemes reach the intended beneficiaries.
3. Bengaluru Tech Summit, 2022 (BTS 2022)

Context – Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the silver jubilee edition of the Bengaluru Tech Summit virtually from Bali, Indonesia.
Details –
- Shri Narendra Modi called Bengaluru the home of technology and thought leadership, an inclusive and innovative city and said that Indian youth has ensured tech globalisation and talent globalisation.
- India is at the 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index as compared to 81st in 2015. Since 2021, the number of unicorn start-ups has doubled and now India is the 3rd largest start-up hub in the world. There are hundreds of international companies having their R & D centres in India.
