Vayulink Platform [UPSC Notes]

Vayulink Platform

• It is an ad-hoc data link communication system, which when installed in an aircraft, helps pilots to deal with adverse conditions by maintaining the communication network with the base station.
• The Vayulink platform has been developed by the Indian Air Force for steady and jam-proof communication with the base station.
• This platform uses the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) for radio communication with the base station in case of poor signals.

Advantages of Vayulink Platform

• It will provide the position of the friendly forces on the ground including troops and tanks beneath. It thus helps in preventing fratricide or friendly fire.
• It will help pilots to deal with bad weather by providing weather-related data.
• Pilots generally lose communication with the base station while flying over hills, but Vayulink can provide secured, uninterrupted and jammer-proof radio communication with the base.
• It provides information related to the position of other aircrafts nearby and thus helps in averting aircraft collisions in midair.
• Overall, it enhances combat coordination and enables real-time planning for multiple teams approaching a target from different directions.

Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS): It is a Navigation Satellite System, developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which will provide accurate real-time positioning and timing services over India and the region around the country. It is also known as NAVIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation).
