The Coromandel Coast is located in?

  • The Coromandel Coast is located in the Eastern Ghats, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is on the South-Eastern Coast of India.
  • With an area of 22,800 sq km, it is surrounded by the Utkal Plains to the North, the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Kaveri delta to the south, and the Eastern Ghats to the West.
  • Tuticorin, known as the “Sea gateway to Tamil Nadu “, is located on the Coromandel Coast. It is the hub of pearl fishing and shipping industries.
  • Agriculture is the linchpin of this coastal economy. The rich and fertile alluvial plains favour a variety of crops, including;rice, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and peanuts grown along the coast.
  • It receives heavy rainfall due to its location in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats.
  • Another important feature of the Coromandel coast is the wetlands along the river deltas, including Pulicat Lake.
  • It is believed that the name Coromandel has been derived by the Portuguese from the Chola empire, which ruled India for more than 1500 years.
