The Indian Constitution was adopted on?

  • The Indian Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949
  • This day is known as Constitution Day or National Law Day.
  • The Representative of the people of India adopted the Constitution, and India was made a sovereign, democratic republic.
  • However, it came into effect on January 26, 1950, to commemorate the declaration of Purna Swaraj in 1930. The Constituent Assembly ceased to exist and was transformed into the Provisional Parliament of India. The Constitution replaced the Government of India Act, of 1935 as the fundamental governing document.
  • The Constituent Assembly took two years, eleven months, and seventeen days to draft the Constitution of India.
  • The Constituent Assembly met for the first time on 9 December 1946. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected the first President of the Constituent Assembly. There were 11 sessions prior to the adoption of the Constitution.
  • The members of the Constituent Assembly were indirectly elected by the members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies.
  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru passed the Objective Resolution on 13 Dec 1946 as a set of guiding principles for framing the Constitution.
