- Established on 7 December 1954, it is the first tri-service academy in the world.
- The motto of the orgnaisation is “Service Before Self” and is affiliated with the Ministry of Defence.
- The head of the academy is the Commandant of the National Defence Academy.
- Students are inducted into the academy based on the examination conducted by UPSC, followed by extensive interviews by the Service Selection Board that analyzes the physical and social skills as well as leadership qualities of the individual.
- Indian Military Academy (IMA) is located in Dehradun.
- Air Force Academy (AFA) is located at Dundigal.
- Indian Naval Academy (INA) is located in Ezhimala, Kerala.
