SSC CGL Subjects (Tier-wise)

SSC CGL notification 2023 is expected to be out on 1st April 2023. It is very important for candidates preparing for this examination to be aware of the syllabus of the examination and subjects to focus on. SSC CGL Subjects for Tier-I, Tier-II, Tier-III and Tier-IV are discussed in this article.

SSC CGL Exam 2023 Subjects -Tier-I

SSC CGL Tier-1 is conducted online and consists of four important subjects or sections with about 100 questions in total and with maximum marks of 200. The pattern of Tier-I is given below.

Tier-I – General Intelligence And Reasoning

General Intelligence And Reasoning is the most scoring subject/section among all the 4 subjects. It includes both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Topics mentioned under General Intelligence And Reasoning in the syllabus are given in the below table

Tier-I – General Awareness 

This section is aimed at testing the candidates’ knowledge about General awareness and its applications to society. The subjects to be covered while preparing for General awareness are given below:

English Comprehension

This subject/section tests the candidates’ ability to understand correct English, his/ her basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. Questions in this section are usually asked from topics like Phrases and Idioms, One word Substitution, Sentence Correction, Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Spellings Correction, Reading Comprehension, Synonyms-Antonyms, Active Passive, Sentence Rearrangement, Sentence Improvement, Cloze test etc.

Some important books like Quick Learning Objective General English by RS Aggarwal & Vikas Aggarwal, High School English Grammar and Composition(Wren & Martin) and Objective General English by SP Bakshi are recommended while preparing for the exam.

SSC CGL Exam 2023 Subjects – Tier-II

SSC CGL Tier-2 comprises 4 papers of 500 MCQs, and each paper is to be completed in 120 minutes. Details of Tier-2 are given below:

Tier-II – Paper-I 

Paper-I of SSC CGL Tier-II comprises only one subject, i.e., Quantitative Abilities. The topics to be covered under this subject are the same as the Quantitative Aptitude section under Tier-I. But the difficulty of questions asked will be of a higher level than tier-I.

Tier-II – Paper-II

Paper-II deals with English Language and Comprehension. Topics to be covered under this section are spot the error, fill in 21 the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/ detecting misspelt words, idioms & phrases, one word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/ passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/ indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage & comprehension passage. 

Tier-II – Paper-III

Paper-III deals with Statistics. The topics and sub-topics mentioned in the syllabus of SSC CGL notification are given below:

SSC CGL 2023 Subjects – Tier-III

  • Tier-III paper is given by specific candidates who are interested only in the post of “Statistical Investigator Grade-II” & “Compiler”
  • This exam is conducted in offline mode. 
  • The candidates are required to write essays, précis, application letters etc. in this exam.

SSC CGL 2023 Subjects – Tier- IV

The SSC CGL Tier 4 Exam comprises skill tests that are required for certain government posts. Candidates who secure at least the minimum qualifying marks in the examination (Tier I, II, III) can appear in the Skill Test.

The subjects and pattern for the SSC CGL Tier-IV exam are as follows:
