An English researcher named Robert Hooke is credited with the discovery of cell. In the year 1665, he observed thin slices of cork (apart bark of a tree) under a microscope and saw honeycomb structures. The slices of cork appeared like small compartments which were further separated by a wall. Even though he observed dead cells of the cork, he discovered the building blocks of life. And Robert Hooke coined the term “cell”. Later, many scientists observed and studied about the cell and its components. They also developed the cell theory.
