Marathi is the main language used in the state of Maharashtra and is also used in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan family of languages.
Marathi literature is included in the UPSC syllabus as an optional subject for the Mains exam.
The syllabus consists of the grammar of the Marathi language, its history and dialects. Unlike other literature papers, it also includes concepts related to linguistics in a general sense such as basic functions of language, different factors affecting the development of dialects etc.
Apart from these, it includes literary criticism of various works by famous writers in Marathi and reading of prose and poetry.
Marathi Optional Syllabus
Marathi papers carry 500 marks with each paper carrying 250 marks.

Marathi literature is vast and has a well-documented history of literary works from the medieval period. Publications in Marathi also played an important role in the freedom struggle which shaped the development of the literary movements until modern times. Study material for the subject is easily available from various sources and IAS aspirants should take care to carefully read and understand the works prescribed by the syllabus.
